Cultural rules and customs

Tanzania is regarded as one of the best destinations for nature lovers. A safari in Tanzania could expose you to wild animals you would never see in normal life, an unforgettable experience that is well worth the trip. However, it’s important to read about the cultural rules and customs of Tanzania to blend in with the locals.

  • Same-sex activity is illegal in Tanzania and Zanzibar. You could face up to 30 years in prison if caught. Harassment is to be expected, both by the authorities and locals. Public displays of affection between two people of the same sex have to be avoided at all costs.
  • Possession and use of illegal drugs is strongly penalized by the law.
  • Women should adhere to modest dressing in Tanzania. It won’t be necessary while on the beach in Zanzibar, but do take it into account if you’re exploring the island. To dress modestly, wear long skirts or dresses, cover your midriff and avoid clothing items without sleeves.
  • It’s forbidden to take photos of military installations, weapons or personnel. You should avoid photographing all public buildings altogether, including schools and hospitals.
  • The local people are nice, accommodating and helpful. However, it’s not an excuse to be disrespectful. Remember that it’s a conservative culture, so attitudes like screaming or drunkenness could be offensive to them.

  • Haggling is common in Tanzania, and expected. Don’t be afraid to ask for a lower price if you feel like something it’s too expensive: it probably is. You can read our section about the currency of Tanzania for more insight.
