Do you need a visa for Tanzania?

It depends on what your nationality is. Citizens of specific countries are allowed to travel for up to 90 days without the need of having to apply for a visa.

All other nationalities will need to have an approved visa to be able to enter the country. In most cases, if they’re eligible, they will have to apply for an online visa/eVisa. If your country isn’t eligible, then you will have to go to the nearest Embassy or Consulate.

Read our guide about the Visa requirements for Tanzania for more information.

Where can I get a visa for Tanzania?

You can get your visa online, on arrival or in person at the corresponding Embassy of Tanzania. Applying online is much simpler so, if the nationality of your passport allows it, you should choose to do it this way.

Additionally, applying online is a lot quicker: it will only take a few minutes. It’s also more comfortable: instead of having to spend a lot of time at an Embassy, you can apply from the comfort of your own home, or whatever other place in which you can get good internet access.

Can I get a Tanzania visa on arrival?

Yes, a Tanzania visa on arrival is available for citizens of eligible countries (the same who can apply for the online visa).

However, this application method is not advised: it takes longer and it can’t be paid for with a bank card, only with US dollars in cash. It’s also riskier: if your visa is rejected, you will be forced to return to your home country immediately, causing a loss of time and money.

This type of visa is obtained, like its name says, on arrival at the border, at the entry point of your choice (usually the airport). It can be applied for in Tanzania or Zanzibar.

Iraq is the only country obliged to apply on arrival, and they cannot apply online. All other nationalities eligible for the visa on arrival can also apply online, which is the best application method.

Types of visas for Tanzania

There are two main visa types for Tanzania, each with its own characteristics and purpose. Get to know them here:

Single-entry visa

Length of stay: 90 days
Validity: 90 days
Number of entries: single entry
Use: this visa type is for tourism, leisure, and other activities (charity, conferences, etc.) that don’t involve work/a financial gain.

Multiple-entry visa

Length of stay: 90 days for each stay
Validity: 1 year
Number of entries: multiple entries
Use: this visa type is for people who need to enter and leave Tanzania and Zanzibar more than once in a short period of time. It’s also mandatory for US citizens, who can’t apply for the Ordinary Visa.

Is it possible to apply for an extension?

Yes. An extension of the Tanzania travel visa is available, but it can’t be applied for online, only at the Immigration Office in Dar es Salaam once you arrive in the country.

The extension, if granted, will be for up to 90 days. It can be applied for twice, for a stay of up to 6 months.

However, you need to take into account the fact that you need inbound travel insurance for Zanzibar. The validity of the policy is 92 days to cover the duration of the trip and the length of stay allowed by the visas. This means that if you wish to extend the duration of your visa, and you plan on visiting Zanzibar, you will need to purchase travel insurance again through the official website.

Is the Tanzania visa multiple entry?

One type of visa is. Travelers need to apply for it under these circumstances:

  • If they’re holders of US passports
  • If they’re married to a citizen or resident of Tanzania
  • If they’re government consultants
  • If they work for an international NGO
  • If they’re a non-resident director of a company registered in Tanzania
  • If they have bilateral meetings
